Description

Khurba Airport, also known as Komsomolsk-na-Amur Khurba, Komsomolsk South, Uchastok, and Kalinovka, is an air base located 17 kilometers south of Komsomolsk-on-Amur in Khabarovsk Krai, Russia. It operates as a dual-use facility, serving both military and civilian aviation. The airport is operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces.

The airfield began as a military garrison, Khurba-2, and was built during the Second World War. It features considerable tarmac space and an extended area of revetments, designed to Ministry of Defense standards with scattered parking, arched reinforced concrete shelters for aircraft, and a reserve dirt runway parallel to the concrete one. An old original runway of 810 meters is no longer in use.

Historically, several military units have been stationed at Khurba Airport: * From November 1948 to June 1962, the 311th Fighter Regiment defense operated from the base, flying Yak-9, MiG-15, MiG-17, and Su-9 aircraft. * From October 1970 to September 1, 2009, the 277th Bomber Aviation Regiment Mlavsky Red Banner was deployed, primarily with Sukhoi Su-24M aircraft. * From 1991 to 1998, the 216th Fighter Aviation Regiment (216 IAP) operated Sukhoi Su-27 airplanes.

Around 2008, the garrison was reorganized into the 6988th Air Base. Currently, the 277th Guards Bomber Aviation Regiment (277 Gv BAP) is transitioning from flying Sukhoi Su-24M2s to Sukhoi Su-34 (AFIP "Fullback") aircraft, with the first 10 units already delivered. The regiment was deployed to Lida air base in Belarus as part of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

While primarily a military installation, the airport has also handled medium-sized airliners. It regularly facilitated international flights for the Far East region during the Soviet era. Although passenger traffic was effectively closed from the late 1990s to the late 2000s, it has since seen efforts to resume commercial flights, with privatization occurring in 2016 to re-establish regional and potentially future Moscow air links.
