Description
Krichev Air Base is located in the Klimavichy District of the Mogilev Region, Belarus, 13 kilometers east of Krychaw. During the Cold War, the installation served as an interceptor air defense facility for the Soviet Air Defence Force. It hosted the 28th Fighter Aviation Regiment, part of the 2nd Air Defence Corps under the Moscow Air Defence District.
Western intelligence identified the installation via Lockheed U-2 overflights by 1957. The 28th Fighter Aviation Regiment operated the Sukhoi Su-9 throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Facility upgrades were conducted in 1981, and the unit received Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 aircraft in the mid-1980s.
The base was closed in 1993, and the aviation regiment was disbanded. All onsite buildings were razed, leaving only the overgrown runway.
