Description
Luxembourg Airport, formerly known as Sandweiler Airport, is located in the Findel area, approximately 3.25 nautical miles east of Luxembourg City. Established in the 1930s as a grass airfield, the site was occupied by German forces in May 1940. During the Battle of France, the Luftwaffe stationed Jagdgeschwader 53 and Jagdgeschwader 52 at the facility to operate Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighters. In September 1944, the reconnaissance unit Aufklärungsgruppe 123 utilized the airfield for Henschel Hs 126 aircraft. Following the arrival of United States Army combat engineers in September 1944, the site was designated Advanced Landing Ground A-97. The Ninth Air Force 363d Tactical Reconnaissance Group operated photo-reconnaissance aircraft from the base until late 1944. The airfield functioned as a transport supply and casualty evacuation hub until it was returned to Luxembourgish control on August 15, 1945.
The airport currently serves as the country's sole international airport and functions as a cargo hub, ranking fifth in Europe by cargo tonnage. It hosts the headquarters for Luxair and Cargolux. Infrastructure includes a paved runway and two terminal buildings. Terminal A handles primary passenger traffic, while Terminal B is configured for aircraft with lower passenger capacities. The facility includes a high-security zone designed for the transport of valuable goods, allowing aircraft to taxi away from main airport facilities for loading. The airport accommodates approximately 100,000 aircraft movements annually, hosting fleets of Boeing 747 freighters and various commercial passenger aircraft. Ground logistics are supported by the A1 motorway and the Luxembourg City tramway system.
