Description
Malacky Air Base is a military installation located near Malacky in the Bratislava Region of Slovakia. Military activity in the area dates to 1918, with records of an airfield and shooting range established by 1922. The airfield, originally known as Nový Dvor, was constructed in 1937.
Historically, the site served as a seasonal training range for Czechoslovak Air Force squadrons and a testing ground for munitions produced by the Plzeň arms factory. The associated military range occupied an area approximately 12 kilometers long and 7 kilometers wide. In March 1939, German forces seized the airfield and its aircraft inventory, which included Š-328, Š-616, Š-16, A-230, and A-330 types. On September 20, 1944, the 15th U.S. Air Force conducted an air raid that disabled the base and destroyed 41 German aircraft. Unit 4562 Kuchyňa was established at the site in 1947 and operated until October 1992. During this period, the base was utilized for flight training and shooting range operations rather than the permanent stationing of combat units.
The Slovak Armed Forces operate the base, which hosts units of the Slovak Air Force. The facility supports the operation of aircraft including the Alenia C-27J Spartan and F-16 fighter jets. Infrastructure at the site includes the BAK-12 aircraft arrestor system.
