Description
Matsushima Air Field is a Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) aerodrome located in Higashimatsushima, Miyagi Prefecture, 12.2 kilometers west of Ishinomaki. Established on June 7, 1937, for the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service, the base originally hosted the Matsushima Naval Air Group. This unit operated Mitsubishi G3M and G4M bombers during the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Battle of Okinawa. Allied forces bombed the installation five times between July 14 and August 10, 1945. In 1954, the facility was renamed Matsushima Air Field, initiating JASDF training operations with North American T-6 Texan trainers.
The base serves as the headquarters for the 4th Air Wing. Current operations focus on flight training and supporting the 11th Squadron, the JASDF "Blue Impulse" acrobatic display team. Stationed units include the 21st Fighter Training Squadron, which operates Mitsubishi F-2B fighters, and the Air Rescue Wing Matsushima Detachment, which utilizes UH-60J and U-125A aircraft. The 11th Squadron operates Kawasaki T-4 trainers.
In July 1971, an F-86F Sabre departing the base for a training mission collided with All Nippon Airways Flight 58. During the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, the airfield was inundated with seawater. The flooding resulted in the damage or destruction of eighteen Mitsubishi F-2B aircraft belonging to the 21st Fighter Training Squadron and other facility assets.
