Description
Mérida International Airport, officially Aeropuerto Internacional Manuel Crescencio Rejón, is located in the Mérida urban area in the State of Yucatán. Established in 1929 by Mexicana de Aviación, the facility initially supported the Mérida-Mexico City route using Ford Trimotor aircraft. The Mexican government purchased the airport in 1964 and completed a reconstruction of the site in 1968. Since the 1990s, the airport has been operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) and underwent modernizations in 1999, 2011, and 2021.
The facility hosts the Mérida Area Control Center (ACC), managed by the Mexican Airspace Navigation Services. This center provides air traffic control for the Mérida Flight Data Region, covering southeastern Mexico and bordering control sectors in Monterrey, Mexico City, Houston, Havana, and Central America.
Air Force Base No. 8 (Base Aérea Militar No. 8 Mérida, Yucatán) is situated on the airport grounds. This military installation hosts Air Squadron 114, which operates Cessna 182 aircraft. Military infrastructure includes three hangars, personnel accommodations, and two dedicated aprons.
General infrastructure includes a two-story passenger terminal, a general aviation terminal, and cargo logistics facilities. The airport accommodates narrow-body and wide-body aircraft, with the capability to service types including the Boeing 747 and 777. The facility operates 24 hours a day with a capacity for 30 operations per hour. Additional onsite installations include civil aviation hangars and flight training facilities.
