Description

Neuburg Air Base is located in the Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district on the River Danube, approximately 20 kilometers west-southwest of Ingolstadt, Germany. Military aviation at the site began in 1912. Construction of the airfield commenced in 1935, and the facility was designated as an Aviation Weapons School in 1937. During this period, the base operated Dornier Do 23, Focke-Wulf Fw 56, and Junkers Ju 52 aircraft. Toward the end of World War II, the base functioned as a manufacturing and operational site for the Me 262 jet fighter. On March 19, 1945, the facility was bombed by United States Army Air Forces B-24 Liberators. Following its capture by Allied forces, the airfield was assigned the code designation R-60.

The German Air Force operates the base, which hosts Jagdgeschwader 74. This wing is responsible for providing air defense for Southern Germany. The unit has operated Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft from the installation since 2006. Although Neuburg is the smallest fighter aircraft base in the Bundeswehr, it remained active following the 2011 Bundeswehr reforms.

Between June 12 and 23, 2023, the base participated in Air Defender 23. This German-led exercise was the largest air force exercise conducted since the formation of NATO.
