Description
Bahawalpur Airport is situated in lower Punjab, Pakistan, serving the Bahawalpur District. The facility was redeveloped with funding from the government of the United Arab Emirates. Construction of the initial runway segment was completed in November 2002, followed by a modernization project that commenced in November 2004. Phase two of the facility was inaugurated on 21 January 2007. The redevelopment project was funded and overseen by Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum.
The facility is operated by the Pakistan Airports Authority. Extension and redevelopment projects are supervised by the Dubai Civil Aviation Department in coordination with the Defence Ministry of Pakistan. The site supports civil aviation and cargo operations intended to facilitate agricultural exports from the Punjab province.
Infrastructure includes the Sheikh Rashid Terminal, which contains a concourse hall, departure lounges, and administrative offices. Specialized facilities consist of a Commercially Important Persons (CIP) lounge, an air traffic control tower, and a royal lounge reserved for visiting dignitaries. Technical and operational support is provided through dedicated logistics, engineering, and security centers. The airfield includes cargo areas and parking bays for both passenger and cargo aircraft. The facility has hosted aircraft types including the Fokker F27 and the Lockheed C-130 Hercules. All terminal buildings are equipped with climate control and flight information systems.
