Description
Palonegro International Airport is situated seven kilometers west of Bucaramanga in the Santander Department of Colombia. The facility occupies the site of the Battle of Palonegro, which occurred during the Thousand Days War. It serves as the replacement for the Gómez Niño Airport, a facility established in 1938 that functioned as a headquarters for Avianca and Taxader before its closure due to safety and navigation constraints within the urban area. Construction of the Palonegro facility commenced in 1967 and involved the leveling of terrain characterized by hills and canyons. The airport was officially opened in August 1974, with initial operations conducted by Boeing 727 aircraft.
The facility provides domestic and international flight operations for the Bucaramanga Metropolitan Area. Scheduled services are maintained by carriers including Avianca, Copa Airlines Colombia, EasyFly, and Satena. Flight routes connect the airport to Colombian urban centers as well as international destinations in Panama and the United States.
Infrastructure includes a terminal building that underwent expansion between 2014 and 2018, resulting in a floor area of approximately 19,000 square meters. Facilities consist of departures halls, check-in areas, baggage claim sections, airline administrative offices, and jet bridges. The airport is situated on a plateau and is accessed via a highway link connecting the site to the city and the municipality of Girón.
