Description
Princess Olga Pskov International Airport, also known as Pskov-Kresty, is an airfield located 6 km southeast of Pskov in Pskov Oblast, Russia. It operates as a dual-use facility, serving both military and commercial aviation. The airfield's history dates back to the 1930s, when it became a host base for a Soviet Airforce regiment. During the German Nazi occupation, it was used by the Luftwaffe to supply advancing Wehrmacht troops. After World War II, it resumed some commercial use alongside its military function, offering commuter services and scheduled flights to various destinations within the USSR.
By 1955, intelligence sources reported four-engine aircraft operating from the base. In the 1960s, the airfield hosted Antonov An-10 and Antonov An-12 turboprop transports. In the 1970s, the aircraft were upgraded to Ilyushin Il-76 jets, operated by the 334th Military Transport Aviation Regiment. By 1984, the airbase maintained a complement of 27 Il-76 aircraft. The base is currently home to the 334th Military Transport Aviation Regiment, part of the 12th Military Transport Aircraft Division of Military Transport Aviation, which operates the Ilyushin Il-76. The air base features 27 large revetments arranged in a complex taxiway layout. On 29 August 2023, the airbase was targeted by a Ukrainian drone attack, which resulted in the destruction of two Il-76 jets and damage to another two.
