Description
RAAF Base Amberley is located 8 km southwest of Ipswich, Queensland. The site, traditionally known as Jeebropilly by the Jagera, Yuggera, and Ugarapul clans, was gazetted for defense purposes in December 1938. The base opened in June 1940 with No. 24 Squadron as its first occupant. During World War II, the facility served as a center for aircraft assembly and repair and was used by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). In September 1942, the base was the departure point for the first troops airlifted into combat when members of the 126th Infantry Regiment were flown to Port Moresby. The United States transferred the facility to Australia in 1947, after which it served as a station for RAAF heavy bomber squadrons.
The base is operated by the Royal Australian Air Force and houses over 5,000 personnel. It serves as the station for several Force Element Groups, including units from Air Combat Group and Air Mobility Group. Stationed flying units include No. 1 Squadron operating F/A-18F Super Hornets, No. 6 Squadron operating EA-18G Growlers, No. 33 Squadron operating Airbus KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transports, No. 35 Squadron operating C-27J Spartans, and No. 36 Squadron operating Boeing C-17A Globemaster III transports.
The installation hosts various headquarters, including Headquarters No. 82 Wing, No. 95 Wing, and No. 96 Wing. Combat support is provided by No. 382 Squadron and No. 23 Squadron. Australian Army occupants include the 9th Force Support Battalion and the 6th Engineer Support Regiment.
Infrastructure across the 1,600-hectare site includes maintenance areas, training colleges, and the RAAF Security and Fire School. The airfield was formerly designated as a Transoceanic Abort landing site for the NASA Space Shuttle program. Technical support is provided by the Heavy Air Lift Systems Program Office and the Strike Reconnaissance Systems Program Office.
