Description

RAF Leeming is a Royal Air Force station located near Leeming, North Yorkshire, England. It was originally known as Londonderry Aerodrome in the 1930s before being acquired by the RAF and opened as a bomber station in June 1940 during the Second World War. During this period, it hosted various RAF and Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) squadrons, primarily operating Handley Page Halifax bombers, as well as Short Stirling, Armstrong Whitworth Whitley, Vickers Wellington, and Avro Lancaster aircraft. After the war, it transitioned to a night-fighter base with de Havilland Mosquito, Gloster Meteor, and Gloster Javelin aircraft, before becoming a Flying Training Command airfield in 1961, home to No. 3 Flying Training School with BAC Jet Provost aircraft. In 1987, the airfield closed for a year for the installation of hardened aircraft shelters and became a front-line air defence base equipped with Panavia Tornado F.3s, hosting Nos 11(F), 23, and 25(F) Squadrons. The last Tornado squadron disbanded in 2008. Since 2006, it has served as the home of the deployable RAF communications cadre (No. 90 Signals Unit RAF) and No. 135 Expeditionary Air Wing. The station also hosted a BAE Systems program for stripping redundant Tornado aircraft of usable components. Current units include No. 135 Expeditionary Air Wing, Joint Forward Air Control Training and Standardisation Unit, No. 90 Signals Unit, No. 34 Squadron RAF Regiment, No. 607 (County of Durham) Squadron (Royal Auxiliary Air Force), No. 609 (West Riding) Squadron (Royal Auxiliary Air Force) Regiment, RAF Leeming Mountain Rescue Team, and various training units operating Tutor T1 aircraft. Additionally, a Joint Qatar Emiri Air Force-RAF Hawk Training Squadron operates Hawk Mk.167 aircraft for pilot training. The station's deployable elements form the core of No. 135 Expeditionary Air Wing, which has participated in operations such as Baltic Air Policing. The station's gate guardian is a Tornado F3, commemorating its history as an air defence base.
