Description

Ramat David Airbase, designated Wing 1 "Ezer Weizman," is an Israeli Air Force (IAF) facility located 20 kilometers southeast of Haifa in the Jezreel Valley. It serves as the northernmost IAF installation for fighter aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The site originated as a British military camp before the Royal Air Force (RAF) established a permanent airfield in 1942. During World War II, the facility served as a training center for Jewish paratroopers and an alternative landing site for the Haifa Aerodrome. Following the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948, the RAF maintained the base to cover the withdrawal of British forces. On May 22, 1948, the Royal Egyptian Air Force attacked the base, resulting in the destruction of several aircraft and four British fatalities. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) took control of the facility shortly thereafter.

Current operations at Ramat David include the 101 "First Fighter" Squadron and 105 "Scorpion" Squadron, both of which operate F-16C/D Barak aircraft after relocating from Hatzor Airbase in 2021. They joined the 109 "The Valley" Squadron, which has operated F-16D aircraft at the site since the 1950s. The base also hosts the 157 and 160 Squadrons, which operate classified UAVs. The 193 "Defenders of the West" Squadron, which operated AS565 Panther maritime helicopters for the Israeli Navy, was closed at the base in August 2025, with its mission slated for relocation to Palmachim Airbase.

Infrastructure at the facility includes three runways, a heliport, and an Air Traffic Control tower. Aircraft are housed in hardened underground hangar systems with multiple entrances to provide protection against missile strikes. The base is also equipped with the Iron Dome defense system.
