Description
Ramon Airbase, also designated Wing 25 or the Negev Airbase, is an Israeli Air Force (IAF) facility located in the Negev desert highland. It is situated 50 km south of Beersheba and 20 km northwest of Mitzpe Ramon, near the Egyptian border. Constructed between 1979 and 1982 by United States companies, the base was established as a replacement for Israeli infrastructure on the Sinai Peninsula returned to Egypt following the 1978 Camp David Accords.
The base hosts several fighter and attack helicopter units. Fixed-wing operations are centered on three squadrons operating F-16I Sufa aircraft: 119 Squadron ("Bat"), 201 Squadron ("The One"), and 253 Squadron ("Negev"). Rotary-wing assets include 113 Squadron ("Hornet"), which operates AH-64D Apache Longbow (Saraf) helicopters, and 190 Squadron ("Magic Touch"), which operates AH-64A Apache (Peten) helicopters. The base also houses special units of the Israel Defense Forces, including the Sky Rider Unit, the Meitar Unit, and the David's Sling Brigade.
Infrastructure at Ramon expanded in the late 1980s with the addition of a heliport to accommodate the arrival of attack helicopters. Recent developments involve the construction of secured facilities and hangars north of the runways. These areas are associated with the operation of a top-secret long-range reconnaissance stealth unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), referred to by analysts as the RA-01. Satellite imagery from 2025 indicates the continued expansion of UAV infrastructure.
