Description
Rostock-Laage Airport is located in the town of Laage within the Rostock district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Construction of the facility began in 1979 for the National People's Army. It became operational in 1984, hosting Fighter Wing JBG 77 and Navy Fighter Wing 28. Following German reunification, the Bundeswehr deactivated the site in 1990 but reactivated it in 1993 to accommodate Jagdgeschwader 73. Civilian operations commenced the same year on a 60-hectare portion of the site managed by Flughafen Rostock Laage-Güstrow GmbH.
The facility functions as a joint public and military airport. The military sector hosts Jagdgeschwader 73 of the German Air Force. On the civilian side, Lufthansa Aviation Training has conducted practical flight training at the airport since relocating from Bremen in February 2021. The airport also supports seasonal leisure flights and charter operations for cruise ship passengers traveling to the port of Warnemünde.
Infrastructure includes a passenger terminal equipped with two jet bridges and apron positions. The airport is capable of handling wide-body aircraft up to the Boeing 747-400, though traffic primarily consists of mid-sized aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and Bombardier CRJ900. There are several stands for general aviation planes. The site is situated near the A19 and A20 motorways and includes parking for over 1,000 vehicles.
In June 2023, the airfield participated in Air Defender 23, a German Air Force-led exercise involving NATO air forces. Recent commercial developments include the termination of routes by Lufthansa and the announced cessation of Condor's seasonal service to Palma de Mallorca in November 2024.
