Description
Construction on Shuimen Air Base was first observed via satellite imagery in 2009. The facility is built on a hilltop at an altitude of 364 meters in Shuimen Township, Fujian Province, for which a swathe of land over two kilometers long was cleared.
The base is operated by the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). As of 2012, J-10 multirole combat aircraft were observed deployed at the facility. Reports also indicated the presence of Sukhoi Su-30 fighters and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). S-300 long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) batteries have also been identified at the base. These systems may be the S-300PMU1 model or the Chinese HQ-9 derivative. The base is located 246 km from Taipei and 380 km from the Senkaku Islands.
