Description
Springfield–Beckley Municipal Airport, also known as Springfield Air National Guard Base, is a civil-military airport located in Green Township, Clark County, near Springfield, Ohio. It is owned by the city of Springfield. The airport is named after the Beckley family, who had connections to the Wright Brothers. It serves as a base for three units of the Ohio Air National Guard, including the 178th Wing. Historically, the airport had scheduled airline flights from 1948 to 1955. In 2005, the 178th Fighter Wing's F-16 training mission was discontinued due to the Base Realignment and Closure Act. The airport received an updated master plan in 2016 and was recognized as the 2023 Ohio Airport of the Year. It covers 1,516 acres and features two runways: 06/24, measuring 9,010 feet (2,746 meters) with an asphalt/concrete surface, and 15/33, measuring 5,498 feet (1,676 meters) with an asphalt surface. Facilities include a fixed-base operator providing fuel and various services. The airport has received federal grants for runway rehabilitation, lighting upgrades, and the addition of an electric charging station and flight simulator. New hangars and an expanded aircraft parking ramp opened in 2023. Springfield–Beckley Municipal Airport is also home to the Ohio UAS Center, managed by the Ohio Department of Transportation, and has hosted UAS testing for the United States Air Force, Amazon, and Walmart. It is the site of the National Advanced Air Mobility Center of Excellence, focusing on autonomous flight and electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles. In 2022, the airport recorded 32,770 aircraft operations.
