Description
Springfield Air National Guard Base is located at Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport in Green Township, Clark County, Ohio. The facility is owned by the city of Springfield. Federal approval for the airport site was granted in June 1943, and construction began in August 1944. The facility opened in May 1946 and supported commercial air service through the mid-1950s. The Ohio Air National Guard established a presence at the site in September 1955 with the relocation of the 162nd Fighter Squadron. The airport was renamed Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport on October 7, 1985, in honor of World War I aviator Henry A. Beckley.
The base hosts the 178th Wing and two additional units of the Ohio Air National Guard. The 178th Fighter Wing previously conducted F-16 training until the mission was removed following the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Act. Current operations focus on military and civil Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) research and testing. The facility houses the Ohio UAS Center and the National Advanced Air Mobility Center of Excellence, which conducts research for the Department of Defense into autonomous flight and electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles. The Air Force Research Lab utilizes the site for drone testing.
The installation encompasses 1,516 acres and maintains two asphalt runways. Infrastructure includes aircraft hangars, an aircraft parking ramp, and maintenance facilities. Specialized assets for UAS and autonomous flight operations include dedicated airspace and a surveillance radar system. The facility hosts single-engine and multi-engine aircraft, helicopters, and jet aircraft. A fixed-base operator provides fueling and ground services.
