Description

Taszár Air Base is located in Somogy County, Hungary, approximately 10 kilometres east of Kaposvár. In December 1995, the installation became the first NATO military base established on former Warsaw Pact territory. It served as a staging post for peacekeeping forces deployed to the Balkans.

Between 1995 and 1997, the base supported Operations Joint Endeavor and Joint Guard, facilitating airlift missions involving C-130 transport aircraft and commercial charters. In 1999, the United States Marine Corps utilized the facility to support aircraft during Operation Allied Force. From 1998 to 2004, the base hosted the National Support Element of the United States Army during Operation Joint Forge. This unit was redesignated as the United States Army Support Element Taszár in late 2000. Between late 2002 and April 2003, the United States used the installation to train Free Iraqi Forces.

The base was reportedly mothballed in 2001. As of April 2011, the facility is reported as disused.

Infrastructure at the site includes a concrete runway. Historically, the base hosted the 31st Kapos Tactical Fighter Regiment. Throughout its periods of operation, the facility hosted various aircraft types, including C-130 transports, United States Marine Corps aircraft, and large-scale commercial charters.
