Description
Tulsa International Airport (TUL) is a civil-military airport located five miles northeast of Downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma. Originally named Tulsa Municipal Airport upon its acquisition by the city in 1929, it was renamed Tulsa International Airport in 1963. The airport features customs and border patrol facilities, enabling international operations despite primarily serving domestic destinations. It is co-located with Tulsa Air National Guard Base, which hosts the 138th Fighter Wing of the Oklahoma Air National Guard.
The airport covers 4,360 acres and has three paved runways: 18L/36R (10,000 ft, grooved concrete), 18R/36L (6,101 ft, grooved asphalt), and 8/26 (7,376 ft, grooved concrete). In 2023, the airport recorded 86,011 aircraft operations, with 133 based aircraft, including 22 military.
Historically, Air Force Plant No. 3 was built on the southeast side of the airport during World War II, where Douglas Aircraft manufactured various aircraft. This facility was later used by Douglas (McDonnell Douglas) and Rockwell International (Boeing) for aircraft manufacturing, modification, repair, and research. Spirit AeroSystems currently builds commercial airline parts for Boeing and Gulfstream in parts of the building, while IC Bus Corporation assembles school buses in another section.
Tulsa International Airport serves as the global maintenance headquarters for American Airlines, employing over 5,000 people. This facility performs major overhaul work on a significant portion of American's fleet and also conducts contract maintenance for other carriers. Lufthansa Technik Component Services LLC, a subsidiary of Lufthansa Technik AG, also maintains a facility at the airport, providing maintenance, repair, and overhaul services to airlines. The airport's terminal underwent significant renovations between 2010 and 2015.
