Description
Tulsa Air National Guard Base is located five miles northeast of downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma, co-located with Tulsa International Airport. The installation originated as Tulsa Municipal Airport in 1928, with the city assuming ownership in 1929. The 138th Fighter Wing of the Oklahoma Air National Guard was organized at the site in 1940 as the 125th Observation Squadron. During World War II, the site housed Air Force Plant No. 3, where Douglas Aircraft manufactured, assembled, and modified bombers for the U.S. Army Air Forces. The plant was reactivated in 1950 for the production of Boeing B-47 Stratojet and Douglas B-66 Destroyer aircraft.
The base hosts the 138th Fighter Wing and functions as a center for aerospace manufacturing and heavy maintenance. It houses the global maintenance and engineering headquarters for American Airlines. Maintenance operations at the facility support fleets of Airbus A320 family, Boeing 737, and Boeing 787 aircraft.
Infrastructure includes a 3.3-million-square-foot maintenance plant, a wheel-and-brake overhaul facility, and a composite repair center. Lufthansa Technik Component Services is headquartered at the site, operating a 72,000-square-foot facility for maintenance, repair, and overhaul services. Manufacturing facilities on the grounds are used by Spirit AeroSystems to produce wing and floor beam components for Boeing and Gulfstream aircraft. Additional facilities include the IC Bus Corporation assembly plant and the Tulsa Air and Space Museum.
