Description
Zaragoza Air Base is located 15 kilometers west of Zaragoza in the Aragon region of Spain. The installation shares facilities with Zaragoza Airport. The base was operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) from 1958 to 1992 under the 1953 Pacts of Madrid, functioning as one of three USAF Cold War airbases in Spain. The Spanish State resumed full sovereign control of the facilities on February 12, 2004.
The Spanish Air Force operates the base, which hosts Ala 15 and Ala 31. Resident units include the Agrupación de la Base Aérea de Zaragoza, the North Command and Control Group (GRUNOMAC), and the Air Deployment Support Squadron (EADA). The base also houses the School of Security, Defense and Support Techniques (ETESDA), the Air Deployment Support Medical Unit (UMAAD-Zaragoza), and the IV Battalion of the Military Emergencies Unit (UME). Logistics and administrative organizations on-site include the Zaragoza Pharmacy Center (CEFARZA), the Zaragoza DFR Delegate Office, and Mobilization Center No. 3.
Aircraft operated from the base include the Airbus A400M, assigned to Ala 31, and the C-101. During the Trident Juncture 2015 exercise, the installation hosted United States Army AH-64 Apache helicopters.
