Description
The Ukrspecsystems PD-2 is a Ukrainian multi-purpose unmanned aerial system (UAS) designed and built by UkrSpecSystems. It was developed as a deep modernization of the PD-1, an aircraft created in cooperation with the People's Project volunteer organization after foreign suppliers refused to sell UAVs to Ukraine during the Russo-Ukrainian War in 2014. Development of the PD-2 began in 2019, with its first flight occurring that same year. The system was introduced to the market around 2021, and more than 20 airframes have been produced.
The aircraft features a modular design that allows it to take off from a runway or be fitted with four removable electric lift propellers for vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) operations. The PD-2 has a wingspan of 5 m, a length of 2.85 m, a height of 1.02 m, and a maximum take-off weight of 55 kg. It has an empty weight of approximately 45 kg and can carry a payload of up to 11 kg. Power is supplied by a single 100 cc four-stroke gasoline engine running on A95 fuel, which drives a two-bladed pusher propeller and is paired with an onboard 300 W electric generator.
The manufacturer states the PD-2 has a maximum flight speed of 140 km/h, a cruising speed of 100 km/h, and a stall speed of 65 km/h. It has a maximum flight distance of 1,300 km and an endurance of more than 8 hours with a full payload, though some sources report up to 10 hours. Its service ceiling is listed as 3,800 m by the manufacturer, with other sources citing limits of 3,000 m, 4,500 m, or 5,000 m. The system operates with an encrypted primary datalink range of over 180 km and a backup datalink range of over 150 km. A standard system deployment includes two reconnaissance UAVs, a ground control station, and a mobile control post based on a four-wheel drive minibus.
For combat operations, the PD-2 can carry small aerial bombs with warheads weighing up to 3 kg. The UAS is operated by the Armed Forces of Ukraine and has been deployed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
