Description
Norinco developed the Type 64 in China, with production starting in 1964. The firearm was designed as an integrally suppressed semi-automatic handgun for specialized applications.
The pistol employs a blowback action modified with a rotating bolt and locking lugs. This configuration facilitates a selector toggle on the breech block, enabling the user to switch between semi-automatic and manual single-action modes. In the manual setting, the bolt locks forward upon chambering, necessitating manual cycling of the slide to extract and load. The integral suppressor utilizes a two-stage design. The first stage consists of a baffle system in line with the barrel. The second stage, located in a housing below the barrel, is divided into two sections: an upper expansion chamber and a lower mesh baffle system connected by a porting arrangement situated after the primary baffles.
Adoption of the Type 64 began in 1964 by the People's Liberation Army. Beyond domestic use, the firearm was issued to the People's Army of Vietnam and the Viet Cong, seeing service throughout the Vietnam War. The Type 67 eventually succeeded the Type 64 in the Chinese inventory.
