Description

State Factory 66 manufactured the Type 64 in China, developing it alongside the Type 64 suppressed pistol for special forces missions. Unlike many suppressed firearms that modify existing production models, designers engineered this weapon from its inception with an integrated suppressor. It represents one of the few Chinese small arms from the Cold War era designed independently of direct Soviet models. The design functions as an amalgam of multiple firearms, integrating the bolt of a PPS submachine gun and the trigger group of a ZB vz. 26 onto an AKS-47 receiver.

The weapon utilizes a blowback, open-bolt operating system with selective-fire capability. It features an integral suppressor designed to function with dedicated subsonic ammunition, though it can also chamber standard ammunition at the cost of accelerated suppressor wear. The receiver incorporates a safety and fire selector lever derived from the Type 56 assault rifle, supplemented by an additional trigger safety to prevent accidental discharge. Iron sights with a flip-up rear sight provide aiming, and the firearm features a folding shoulder stock. Feed options include box magazines.

The People's Liberation Army deployed the weapon during the Sino-Vietnamese War in 1979. China also exported the firearm to North Vietnam during the Vietnam War, where the military and armed police utilized it under the designation K64. The People's Liberation Army eventually phased out the weapon, replacing it in service with the Type 85 submachine gun.
