Description
The Burak-class, or B-class, comprises a series of corvettes that were originally built between 1972 and 1979. These vessels initially served as A69 type aviso units before being transferred to the Turkish Naval Forces. Entering Turkish commission in 2002, they were integrated to fulfill specific maritime security roles as part of a fleet transition.
These warships are primarily designed for coastal anti-submarine defense and ocean escort missions. The hull and machinery are characterized by a robust construction and an economical diesel propulsion system, enabling the vessels to conduct operations in both littoral and deep-water environments. The armament configuration supports multi-domain engagement, featuring surface-to-surface missile capabilities, naval gunnery, and specialized anti-submarine equipment such as torpedoes and mortars.
Currently operated by the Turkish Naval Forces, the Burak-class has been deployed for both regional defense and distant overseas missions. Of the six ships originally acquired, five remain in active service, while one was retired in 2022. The class is presently being phased out of active duty as the Turkish Navy continues its transition to the successor Ada-class corvettes.
