Overview

The French Navy, the Marine Nationale, is a full-spectrum blue-water force built to protect the world's second-largest exclusive economic zone, sustain France's independent nuclear deterrent and act as a first-entry force alongside allies. It is one of only two European navies able to deploy a carrier strike group and the only one outside the United States operating a nuclear-powered carrier.

Power projection rests on the carrier Charles de Gaulle and its Rafale M air wing, deployed as a task group with air-defence and anti-submarine frigates, a nuclear attack submarine and a replenishment ship. Recent deployments illustrate the range of the mission set: the Clemenceau 25 mission to the Indo-Pacific, followed in 2026 by the La Fayette 26 deployment, the Orion high-intensity exercise off Normandy and participation in NATO's Baltic Sentry. The surface combatant force combines Horizon-class air-defence destroyers, Aquitaine-class multi-mission frigates and, from October 2025, the first of five Amiral Ronarc'h-class defence and intervention frigates, while Mistral-class amphibious ships provide command and troop lift.

The submarine force is being fully renewed. The Suffren class replaced the last Rubis-class boat when Perle was withdrawn at the end of 2025, and with Tourville commissioned in 2025 and De Grasse delivered in 2026 the navy is more than halfway through a six-boat programme of nuclear attack submarines armed with cruise missiles. Four Triomphant-class ballistic missile submarines maintain continuous at-sea deterrence, to be succeeded by the third-generation SNLE 3G, the first of which is named L'Invincible and is due at sea in the mid-2030s.

The renewal effort extends across every category. The next-generation aircraft carrier, named France Libre in March 2026, is designed to replace Charles de Gaulle at the end of the 2030s with a larger, catapult-equipped nuclear ship. The ageing A69 avisos have been paid off in quick succession, replaced by ocean patrol vessels and by the overseas patrol ships of the Félix Éboué class delivered to the Antilles, French Guiana, Réunion and the Pacific territories. Logistic support has been rebuilt around the Jacques Chevallier-class replenishment ships, and mine countermeasures are moving toward uncrewed systems under a Franco-British programme.

The navy's operational reach is genuinely global, sustained by permanent bases in Djibouti, the United Arab Emirates and the overseas territories, and by forces prepositioned from the Caribbean to Polynesia. It contributes to European and NATO maritime operations in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea approaches, conducts counter-narcotics patrols in the Atlantic and the Caribbean, protects fisheries and sovereignty across scattered island territories, and maintains the permanent deterrent patrol that remains its single most demanding commitment.
