Description

The De Zeven Provinciën class consists of four air-defense and command frigates (Luchtverdedigings- en commandofregatten or LCF) operated by the Royal Netherlands Navy. Built by Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding between 1998 and 2005, the class replaced the Tromp and Jacob van Heemskerck classes. The design shares role and sensor similarities with the German Sachsen class.

The vessels are optimized for anti-aircraft warfare and command functions. The sensor suite includes the SMART-L long-range surveillance radar and the Active Phased Array Radar (APAR). The APAR provides target tracking and missile guidance using the Interrupted Continuous Wave Illumination (ICWI) technique, enabling the simultaneous guidance of semi-active radar homing missiles. Air defense is conducted via the Mk 41 Vertical Launching System, which carries Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles (ESSM) and SM-2 Block IIIA missiles. For surface and subsurface engagements, the ships carry Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Mk 46 torpedoes, and a hull-mounted sonar. Modernization programs have updated the SMART-L radar to support ballistic missile defense (BMD) detection and tracking. Further upgrades include the integration of ESSM Block 2, the replacement of the original naval guns with Otobreda 127/64 variants, and the acquisition of Tomahawk cruise missiles.

Operational history includes live-fire missile evaluations and participation in international maritime missions. In 2003 and 2005, tests conducted near the Azores verified the ICWI technique and the ability of the radar suite to guide missiles to intercepts at ranges exceeding 100 kilometers. During a 2015 NATO exercise, the sensor suite's BMD capabilities were used to detect and track ballistic targets, providing guidance data for intercepts by other coalition vessels. This capability was used again during exercise Formidable Shield 2021 to support an SM-3 engagement. The class has also been deployed for counter-piracy operations off the Horn of Africa. For these missions, the APAR software was modified to increase resolution for detecting small, slow-moving surface targets. Current plans schedule the first vessel's retirement for 2032, with a successor class being developed in cooperation with Germany.
