Description

The development of the Al Zubarah class, also designated as the Doha class, originated from a 2016 naval procurement contract valued at €4 billion. This program facilitated the acquisition of four multi-role vessels to expand maritime combat capabilities. Construction of the series commenced in 2018, with the final unit completed in 2023. The project serves to modernize surface fleet assets through the introduction of specialized air defense and multi-mission platforms.

This multi-role corvette is designed for high-intensity maritime operations. The propulsion system utilizes a combined diesel and diesel configuration to power the hull. The vessel's primary strike and defense systems include a super rapid main gun, surface-to-air missiles for long-range engagement, and anti-ship missiles for surface warfare. Close-in protection is provided by a rolling airframe missile system. For extended range and utility, the ship features a flight deck and hangar to house an NH90 helicopter, alongside facilities for launching rigid-hulled inflatable boats.

The class is currently operated by the Qatari Emiri Navy, with all four units in active service. Following the commissioning of the lead ship in 2021, the remaining vessels were integrated into the fleet by mid-2023. These assets are deployed to execute multi-role missions, providing the operator with persistent surface-to-air and anti-ship capabilities in its area of operations.
