Description
The programme for this class of first-rank frigates was initiated in 2015 to address requirements established in the 2013 White Paper on Defense and National Security. Originally designated as the Frégate de Taille Intermédiaire (FTI), the project was established to provide a fleet capable of operating in crisis zones. These vessels are intended to incrementally supersede the La Fayette class by 2035, serving alongside existing multi-purpose and air-defense assets. The platform was developed to meet modern naval requirements and cater to the demands of international export markets.
This general-purpose combatant is engineered with a high degree of digitalization and modularity. Its primary sensor and weapon suites are centered on a fully digital multi-function radar system with fixed antennas, enabling missions ranging from ship self-defense to extended air defense. For sub-surface warfare, the platform utilizes a combination of hull-mounted and towed-array sonars, supported by organic aviation assets and torpedo launch systems. The electronic warfare architecture incorporates digital ESM systems and anti-torpedo decoys. To address evolving asymmetric threats such as unmanned aerial systems, the design integrates specialized point-defense missile systems. The hull and superstructure utilize stealth features, including a specialized cupola for the primary artillery and a reduced footprint for its towed sensors.
Deployment of the class is scheduled to begin in 2026, with initial units assigned to strategic locations such as Brest. The platform is designed for a mission spectrum ranging from crisis zone operations to high-intensity naval warfare. Beyond its primary domestic role, the class has been adopted by the Hellenic Navy to modernize its surface fleet with specific equipment configurations. It has also been positioned as a contender for various international procurement programmes. These vessels are capable of sustained operations in contested maritime zones, facilitating replenishment at sea and integration within larger naval task groups.
