Description
The Sirio class, also designated as the Costellazioni II series or Nuove Unità di Pattugliamento d'Altura (NUPA), consists of two patrol vessels operated by the Italian Navy. Fincantieri constructed the units at the Riva Trigoso and Muggiano shipyards. Financed by the Italian Department of Transport and Navigation under law 413/1998, the class was developed for maritime economic zone surveillance, antipollution, and rescue operations.
The design is derived from the Nuove Unità Minori Combattenti (NUMC), sharing logistics, interoperability, and combat system features with that class. The hull and superstructure incorporate stealth features. Propulsion consists of Wärtsilä-NSD diesel engines driving two shafts with variable-pitch propellers and active-fin stabilizers. Three Isotta Fraschini diesel generators provide power for the onboard electronics. Sensors include a multi-mode search radar with over-the-horizon detection, navigation radars, and a combat management system. Since 2012, the vessels have been equipped with an infrared search and track (IRST) system and integrated tactical data links.
The armament consists of guns with the provision for a bow-mounted Super Rapid gun. The ships feature a flight deck capable of embarking a single helicopter, such as the NH-90 or AB-212, though the design lacks a hangar. For environmental missions, the vessels are fitted with skimmers, oil recovery tanks, chemical dispersants, and a chemical laboratory. Two rigid-hull inflatable boats (RHIBs) are also carried.
The two units, Sirio and Orione, were commissioned in 2003. They bear the names of World War II torpedo boats previously operated by the Italian Royal Navy. Based in Augusta, the vessels operate under the Forces Command for patrol, surveillance, and coastal defense (COMFORPAT). Operational roles include maritime traffic control, cargo surveillance, and immigration control operations. They function in conjunction with NUMC units within the COMSQUAPAT1 squadron.
