Description

A Russian Aerospace Forces Tu-22M3 (NATO: Backfire-C) strategic bomber crashed on June 15, 2026, during a planned training flight. Videos showed the aircraft entering a steep nosedive before crashing into an open field, followed by an explosion and burning debris; the site was geolocated to the Svirsk area of Irkutsk Oblast, near Belaya Air Base, home to the 200th Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiment. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, quoted on Russian Telegram channels, the crew ejected and survived. The aircraft's controlled descent over unpopulated terrain suggests the malfunction occurred at altitude. The loss reduces Russia's Tu-22M3 fleet from 57 to 56 airframes.
