Description
Biên Hòa Air Base is a Vietnam Air Defence - Air Force (VADAF) military airfield located in the Tân Phong ward of Biên Hòa, Đồng Nai Province. Originally established by the French Air Force as Base aérienne tactique 192, the facility served as a maintenance center for F8F Bearcats during the First Indochina War. In 1955, the installation became the logistics support base for the Republic of Vietnam Air Force (RVNAF). Between 1961 and 1973, the United States used the base for Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine units. During this period, concrete runways and supporting infrastructure were constructed to replace original pierced steel planking. The airfield was seized by the People's Army of Vietnam in April 1975.
The base is currently operated by the VADAF and hosts the 935th Fighter Regiment, which operates Sukhoi Su-30MK2 multirole aircraft. The facility also serves as the location for a dioxin remediation project initiated in 2019 to address contamination from defoliant storage.
Infrastructure historically included the first Combat Skyspot ground-directed bombing radar system and "Wonderarch" hardened aircraft shelters. During the Vietnam War, the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing served as the host unit. The airfield has hosted squadrons of F-100D Super Sabres, B-57B Canberra tactical bombers, and A-1E Skyraiders. Other stationed units included the 19th Tactical Air Support Squadron, the 173rd Airborne Brigade, and Marine Aircraft Group 12 (Forward). The RVNAF 3rd Air Division and Air Logistics Command were headquartered at the base, supporting multiple tactical wings equipped with A-1H, F-5, and UH-1 aircraft. Gunship operations were conducted using AC-47 and AC-119K platforms. Other aircraft types hosted at the base have included T-28 Trojans, B-26 Invaders, and C-130 transports.
