Description
Bizerte-Sidi Ahmed Air Base is located 7 km west of Menzel Abderahman and 9 km west-southwest of Bizerte, Tunisia. During World War II, the facility served as a German air base until November 16, 1942, when it was targeted by a United States bombing raid during Operation Torch. The installation was subsequently utilized by the United States Army Air Forces Twelfth Air Force during the North African Campaign under the designation Bizerte Airfield. In late 1943, the base functioned as a heavy bomber airfield for B-17 Flying Fortresses assigned to the 2d Bombardment Group. An air depot was co-located at the site during this period.
The Tunisian Air Force currently operates the facility. Stationed units include No. 11 Squadron, a jet trainer squadron operating Aermacchi MB-326 aircraft; No. 15 Squadron, a fighter squadron operating Northrop F-5 Tiger and Tiger II aircraft; and No. 21 Squadron, a transport squadron operating C-130 Hercules, Let L-410 Turbolet, and G-222 aircraft. United States Africa Command also operates a drone base at the installation.
