Description
Cairo West Air Base is a military installation located on the western side of Cairo in the Cairo Governorate. Established in 1941 as Royal Air Force Landing Ground 224, the site hosted British and Commonwealth squadrons during the Second World War, including units operating Vickers Wellington, Handley Page Halifax, and Douglas Dakota aircraft. During the 1967 Six-Day War, the facility was targeted by the Israeli Air Force during Operation Focus. The base later hosted United States Air Force deployments, including F-4E Phantom II aircraft in 1980 and the 487th Air Expeditionary Wing in 2003.
Owned by the Egyptian Ministry of Defense and operated by the Egyptian Air Force, the base hosts the Egyptian Fighter Weapon School of the 139 Air Division. Stationed units include the 292 Tactical Fighter Wing, which operates squadrons of F-16C/D aircraft, and the 601 Air Wing, which operates E-2C airborne early warning aircraft. The 516 Air Wing maintains a detachment of C-130H transport aircraft at the facility. Historically, the base hosted the 222nd Tactical Fighter Brigade. Infrastructure at the site includes an on-field TACAN station, and the base shares facilities with the adjacent Sphinx International Airport.
