Description
Majid al Tamimi Airbase, officially designated as the Tikrit Air Academy and formerly known as Al Sahra Airfield, is located near Tikrit in northern Iraq, west of the Tigris River. Established in the mid-1970s as part of the "Super-Base" project, the installation functioned as the primary base for the Iraqi Air Force Air Academy. During the 2003 invasion of Iraq, United States Marines from Task Force Tripoli captured the facility from the Iraqi Army. It was subsequently transferred to the United States Army and served as the headquarters for United States Division–North. The facility was renamed Camp Speicher in honor of Captain Michael Scott Speicher, a United States Navy pilot.
The United States transitioned the base to the Government of Iraq on 20 October 2011. The installation is currently operated by the Iraqi Army and Air Force and functions as the Tikrit Air Academy. During the period of American control, the base hosted units from the 4th Infantry Division and 1st Infantry Division, including the 4th Aviation Regiment, the 704th Division Support Battalion, and the 8/229 Attack Helicopter Battalion. Stationed aviation units operated squadrons of Boeing AH-64 Apaches and CH-47 Chinooks. In July 2014, Iraqi special forces secured the base following an assault by insurgents.
Infrastructure at the facility includes two main runways and a secondary runway. The airfield previously featured hangar structures and support facilities for personnel, including a Post Exchange and dining establishments.
