Description
Captain Luis F. Gómez Niño Air Base, also known as Apiay Air Base, is located near Villavicencio in the Department of Meta. It is operated by the Colombian Aerospace Force as the headquarters for Combat Air Command No. 2. The installation also hosts personnel from the Colombian Army, the Colombian Navy, and the United States military under the Plan Colombia cooperation program.
The base was established in 1933 as San José del Guaviare Air Base and relocated to Apiay in 1947 as the Apiay National Airfield. In 1956, the unit utilized AT-6 Texan and T-34 Mentor aircraft for pilot training. It was redesignated Comando Aéreo de Bombardeo in 1959 after receiving B-26 aircraft and was renamed Luis F. Gómez Niño Air Base in 1961. Following the arrival of T-33 and T-37 jet aircraft in 1972, the base assumed its current designation as Combat Air Command No. 2.
Current operations focus on the eradication of the illegal drug trade and actions against illegally armed groups. The base has served as a location for operations including Plan Patriota and Operation JM. Combat Air Command No. 2 manages an area of responsibility encompassing 600,000 km². Infrastructure includes an asphalt runway.
