Description
General Cesáreo Berisso Air Force Base is a Uruguayan Air Force installation located in the Carrasco neighborhood of Montevideo. The base shares runways with Carrasco International Airport and is named in honor of Cesáreo L. Berisso, a pioneer of Uruguayan aviation. Air Brigade I is stationed at the base; it originated as Aeronáutica n.º 1 in April 1936, at which time it was assigned Potez 25 aircraft.
The base houses Air Brigade I and its subordinate units: the Central Office of Assistance, the Carrasco Rescue Coordination Center, No. 3 Squadron (Transportation), and No. 5 Squadron (Helicopters). No. 3 Squadron provides military, light, and tactical transport, alongside VIP transport services. The squadron operates Lockheed C-130 Hercules, Embraer C-95 Bandeirante, Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia, and CASA C-212 Aviocar aircraft. No. 5 Squadron performs utility and VIP transport missions, operating UH-1H Iroquois, Bell 212, and AS-365 Dauphin helicopters.
Military infrastructure is located east of the original civilian terminal. Facilities include the Colonel Jaime Meregalli Aeronautical Museum, which maintains a hangar for static aircraft displays and a building for historical aviation materials. Additionally, the Oficina de Investigación y Prevención de Accidentes e Incidentes de Aviación (OIPAIA) maintains its head office on the property.
