Description
Cerklje ob Krki Air Base is located in Cerklje ob Krki, Slovenia. Established in the 1930s by the Kingdom of Yugoslavia as an auxiliary airfield, it was the only installation in Slovenia used exclusively for military purposes at that time. During the April War of 1941, the base hosted the 6th air patrol group of the Army Aviation. Following the Axis invasion, the facility was occupied by the Wehrmacht between 1941 and 1945. During this period, the German administration expanded the site with brick buildings. The base was utilized during the German operation Roselsprung in 1944.
Following liberation in May 1945, the Yugoslav People's Army assumed control of the installation. Infrastructure updates occurred in 1953, after which the base served as a primary site for the defense of the northwest Yugoslav airspace. During the conflict in 1991, Yugoslav units withdrew from the facility and relocated equipment to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia.
The base is currently operated by the Slovenian Armed Forces and functions as a NATO-integrated military airport. It also facilitates civilian traffic. The facility houses units of the Slovenian Air Force and Air Defence. Infrastructure includes a control tower and permanent brick housing and hangars. The base has hosted various aircraft types, including the Messerschmitt Bf 109, Ilyushin Il-2, P-47 Thunderbolt, F-84G Thunderjet, J-20 Kraguj, J-21 Jastreb, and J-22 Orao. Current operational capabilities include hosting transient NATO aircraft and the operation of Roland Air Defense Missile batteries.
