Description
Gifu Air Field, also designated Gifu Kichi, is located in Kakamigahara City, 13 kilometers east of Gifu in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. The Japan Air Self-Defense Force operates the facility.
The base hosts the Air Development and Test Wing under the Air Development and Test Command. Other units stationed at the installation include the 2nd Air Depot of the Air Material Command. The Central Air Defense Force maintains a presence through the 4th Air Defence Missile Group, specifically the 13th and 15th Fire Units.
Infrastructure at the base includes the Kakamigahara Air and Space Museum. Gifu Air Field serves as an operational site for various aircraft types, including Mitsubishi F-2 and XF-2 fighters and McDonnell Douglas (Mitsubishi) F-15J/DJ Eagles. Transport aircraft operating from the base include the Kawasaki C-1 and Kawasaki XC-2. The base also hosts Kawasaki T-4 and Fuji T-7 trainers. The Air Development and Test Wing has also utilized the Mitsubishi F-4EJ Kai Phantom for its operations.
