Harar Meda Air Base (Debre Zeit Air Base)

Harar Meda Airport is located in Bishoftu (formerly Debre Zeit), Oromia, Ethiopia. Owned by the Ethiopian National Defense Force and operated by the Ethiopian Air Force, it serves as the air force's main base.

The airbase was established in 1946 following the relocation of Ethiopian military aviation from Lideta Airfield in Addis Ababa. Between January and July 1946, 19 Swedish personnel led by Count Carl Gustaf von Rosen arrived at the site to establish training programs for pilots and support staff, with Swedish instructors and Ethiopian cadets constructing the first base infrastructure together. The base received six Saab 91 Safir training aircraft on 24 December 1946, followed by 16 Saab-built B-17 bombers delivered on 10 November 1947.

The facility has periodically accommodated civilian airline traffic during periods when Bole International Airport was unavailable due to construction, processing 101,839 passengers in 2005. Satellite imagery from 2012 shows a mix of helicopters, fighter aircraft, and transport aircraft based there, consistent with its role as the Ethiopian Air Force's primary operating base.
