Description
Jackson–Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport, identified by IATA code JAN and ICAO code KJAN, is a civil-military airport located in Jackson, Mississippi, approximately 6 miles east of Downtown Jackson. Situated in Rankin County, it serves commercial, private, and military aviation. The airport is named after Medgar Evers, a Mississippi Field Secretary for the NAACP. It is administered by the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority (JMAA).
Groundbreaking for the airport occurred in August 1959, with construction costing an estimated $6 million. The airport officially opened in 1963, replacing Hawkins Field as Jackson's primary airport. Initially named Allen C. Thompson Field, it was later known as Jackson Municipal Airport before being renamed Jackson–Evers International Airport in January 2005. The airport has facilities for international flights, including a U.S. Customs office and a Foreign Trade Zone.
The airport covers 3,381 acres and has an elevation of 105 meters. It features two asphalt runways, 16L/34R and 16R/34L, both measuring 2,591 meters by 46 meters. The facility includes an L-shaped terminal with west and east concourses. The Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame museum is located within the airport.
The 172d Airlift Wing of the Mississippi Air National Guard has maintained an Air National Guard base at the airport since 1963. This unit has operated various aircraft types, including the C-119 Flying Boxcar, C-124 Globemaster, C-130 Hercules, and C-141 Starlifter, and currently flies the C-17 Globemaster III. The airport supports operations for multiple airlines, including American Eagle, Delta Air Lines, Delta Connection, Southwest Airlines, United Express, and UPS Airlines for cargo services.
