Description

Joint Base Andrews (JBA) is a United States military facility located in Prince George's County, Maryland. Established in 2009 through the merger of Andrews Air Force Base and Naval Air Facility Washington, it is named after Lieutenant General Frank Maxwell Andrews. The base is under the jurisdiction of the United States Air Force (USAF) 316th Wing, Air Force District of Washington. Construction of the original airfield, Camp Springs Army Air Field, began in 1942 and became operational in May 1943. It was renamed Andrews Field in 1945 and Andrews Air Force Base in 1947. Naval Air Facility Washington moved its operations to Andrews AFB between 1958 and 1961.

Joint Base Andrews serves as the home base for the two Boeing VC-25 aircraft, known as Air Force One when the President of the United States is on board. The 89th Airlift Wing is responsible for worldwide special air mission airlift, logistics, and communications support for senior US leaders. The 316th Wing acts as the host wing, providing security, personnel, contracting, finance, and infrastructure support for numerous units and personnel in the National Capital Region. Other units stationed at JBA include the Air Force Reserve's 459th Air Refueling Wing and the Air National Guard's 113th Wing, which operates F-16C/D Fighting Falcons and C-38A/C-40C transport aircraft. The base also hosts units from the US Army, US Marine Corps Reserve, and US Navy Reserve Force, supporting various aviation and logistical missions. Joint Base Andrews features two operational runways: 01R/19L (2,973.6 meters, asphalt/concrete) and 01L/19R (2,840.1 meters, concrete).
