Joint Base Andrews

Joint Base Andrews is a United States military facility located in Prince George's County, Maryland. Established as Camp Springs Air Base in 1942, the site became operational in 1943. It was renamed Andrews Field in 1945 to honor Lieutenant General Frank Maxwell Andrews and designated Andrews Air Force Base in 1947. The current joint base was established in 2009 following the merger of Andrews Air Force Base and Naval Air Facility Washington under the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure process. Historically, the installation served as the headquarters for Continental Air Command, Strategic Air Command, and the Military Air Transport Service.

The United States Air Force operates the base under the Air Force District of Washington. The 316th Wing is the host unit, responsible for National Capital Region contingency response and infrastructure support for more than 80 tenant organizations. The 89th Airlift Wing conducts special air mission airlift for senior government officials and operates the Boeing VC-25A aircraft designated as Air Force One. Other resident units include the 113th Wing of the District of Columbia Air National Guard, the 459th Air Refueling Wing of the Air Force Reserve, and Naval Air Facility Washington.

The installation hosts various aircraft types, including squadrons of F-16C/D Fighting Falcon fighters and UH-1N Iroquois helicopters. Airlift and refueling capabilities are provided by fleets of KC-135R Stratotankers, C-32A, C-40B, C-37A/B, and C-38A aircraft. Marine Aircraft Group 49 operates UC-35D Citation aircraft from the site, and the U.S. Army Priority Air Transport unit maintains C-37A/B airframes. Notable facilities include the Malcolm Grow Medical Center and the headquarters for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and the 844th Communications Group. Support infrastructure includes the Imagine Andrews Public Charter School and the Francis T. Evans Elementary School.
