Description
Khrabrovo Airport, also known historically as Powunden Airfield, is located 24 kilometers north of Kaliningrad, Russia. It serves as both a public airport with scheduled domestic destinations and a military base for the Russian Navy. The base is home to the 398th Independent Air Transport Squadron of the 132nd Composite Aviation Division of the Baltic Fleet, along with the Special Purpose Aviation Detachment Kaliningrad of the Russian National Guard.
The airfield's history dates back to its military use during World War II. After the war, in 1945, it was transferred to the Civil Air Fleet of the USSR, though military aircraft continued to be based there. In the 1950s, under the name Kaliningrad/Powunden Airfield, it was a major operating location for Ilyushin Il-28 tactical bombers, with observations of MiG-15 aircraft. By the 1960s, it regained civil air transport use and became known as Khrabrovo. A passenger terminal was constructed in 1979, and the airport began handling Tupolev Tu-134 and later Tu-154 operations.
In 2004, the runway, apron, and navigation facilities underwent reconstruction. As part of Russia's preparations for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, a new terminal was put into operation in July 2017. The airport's infrastructure was modernized, which included the lengthening and reinforcement of the runway, installation of new radiotechnical, lighting, and weather forecast equipment, and construction of new aircraft parking spaces and a high-speed taxiway. The reconstruction of the passenger terminal and runway enlargement were officially completed on April 27, 2018.
