Description
Krymsk is an air base operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces, located 4.8 kilometers north of Krymsk in the Krasnodar Krai. It is under the jurisdiction of the 4th Air and Air Defence Forces Army of the Southern Military District. The installation is also identified as the 6972nd Air Force Base.
In January 2001, the 3rd Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment was established at the site following the absorption of the 562nd Fighter Aviation Regiment. The unit was redesignated as the 6972nd Guards Aviation Base in January 2009. The airfield underwent renovation starting in 2011. In July 2012, the base was affected by regional flooding. Reports concerning the extent of the damage were contradictory; some accounts suggested damage to combat aircraft and infrastructure, while the Russian Ministry of Defence stated that the facility suffered negligible impact and only housed decommissioned aircraft in storage at the time. Following the flood, the airfield hosted a military campground to support regional reconstruction efforts.
Current operations at the base include hosting the 1st Guards Composite Aviation Division headquarters and the 3rd Composite Guards Aviation Regiment. The base operates squadrons of Sukhoi Su-27M3 fighter jets. Other aircraft types documented at the facility include Su-30 fighters and Ka-27 helicopters. Satellite imagery from 2024 indicates recent extensions to the runway infrastructure.
In November 2024, during the Russo-Ukrainian War, the base was the target of a drone attack. The Russian Ministry of Defence reported that air defense systems intercepted over 50 unmanned aerial vehicles and stated that no casualties occurred.
