Description

Krymsk is an air base of the Russian Aerospace Forces, operating under the 4th Air and Air Defence Forces Army, Southern Military District. It is located 4.8 kilometers north of Krymsk, Krasnodar Krai, Russia, and is owned by the Ministry of Defence. The base is also known as the 6972nd Air Force Base. The exact year of its initial construction is not specified. In 2011, the airfield was closed for renovation. The main fighter regiment at the base underwent several reorganizations and re-designations; on January 9, 2001, it was renamed the 3rd Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, and on January 12, 2009, it became the 6972nd Guards Aviation Base. As of February 2022, the base was home to the 1st Guards Composite Aviation Division HQ and the 3rd Composite Guards Aviation Regiment, which operates two squadrons of Sukhoi Su-27M3 aircraft. In July 2012, the airbase was affected by floods in Krymsk. While an eyewitness reported significant damage and combat aircraft being flooded, the Russian Ministry of Defence denied serious damage, stating the airfield is on a hill and water levels reached a maximum of 10 centimeters. Following the floods, military personnel were deployed to help rebuild the city, and a military campground was established on the airfield. On November 14, 2024, during the Russo-Ukrainian War, Ukraine launched a drone attack targeting the Krymsk military airfield, where Su-27 and Su-30 fighter jets and Ka-27 helicopters are stationed. The Russian Ministry of Defence reported shooting down 51 drones with no casualties.
