Description

Monchegorsk Air Base is a military air base located 13 km northeast of Monchegorsk in Murmansk Oblast, Russia. Construction of the base began in the early 1950s, and it was identified as operational by 1957. During the Cold War, it hosted the 174th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment (174 Gv IAP), which operated Yak-28P, Mikoyan MiG-31, and MiG-25PDS aircraft. A MiG-21R squadron was also stationed there in the 1970s, later upgraded to Su-17M3. The base also hosted the 98th Separate Reconnaissance Aviation Regiment (98 ORAP), flying MiG-25RB, Sukhoi Su-17, Sukhoi Su-24MR, and MiG-31 aircraft. On May 20, 1966, the 67th separate air squadron, equipped with Tupolev Tu-126 early warning aircraft, was established at Monchegorsk before being moved to Šiauliai, Lithuania. The 174th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment was dissolved on September 1, 2001. Currently, Monchegorsk Air Base is home to the 98th Guards Composite Aviation Regiment (Military Unit Number 75385), which operates Sukhoi Su-24M/MR, Mikoyan MiG-31BM, and Mil Mi-8MTV helicopters. The base also serves as the aerodrome for the 7000 air group, utilizing Su-24MR, Su-24M, and Mi-8 helicopters. The regiment may now be under Russian Navy command. The base is owned by the Ministry of Defence and operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces and Russian Naval Aviation, controlled by the 6th Air and Air Defence Forces Army and 45th Air and Air Defence Forces Army.
