Description
Morón Air Base is located 3 kilometers southwest of Morón and 20 kilometers from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Situated within a metropolitan area in the Buenos Aires Province, the facility covers 439 hectares. It served as Argentina's primary airport until 1944.
From 1951 to 1988, the base hosted the VII Air Brigade (VII Brigada Aérea) of the Argentine Air Force. During this period, the brigade operated aircraft including the Gloster Meteor, Morane-Saulnier MS-760, Bell UH-1D, Hughes 369, Sikorsky S-58T, Grumman Albatross, and T-34 Mentor. The facility also served as the base for the airline CATA between 1986 and 2004.
Current institutions at the site include the Museo Nacional de Aeronáutica, which maintains a collection of historic aircraft. The Instituto Nacional de Aviación Civil, a government organization, operates at the facility to provide training for civilian pilots and technicians. The base also houses a flying school operated by the Aero Club Argentino and several private flying schools.
