Description

Myrhorod Air Base is located near Myrhorod in the Poltava Oblast of Ukraine. In May 1944, the airfield was allocated to the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) as a heavy bomber staging field, designated as USAAF Station 561. It served as one of three Ukrainian installations operated by the Headquarters, Eastern Command, United States Strategic Air Forces. Between June and September 1944, the base supported Operation Frantic, enabling Eighth and Fifteenth Air Force aircraft to conduct shuttle bombing missions against targets in Eastern Europe while transitioning between bases in Great Britain and Southern Italy. In June 1944, German forces conducted a bombing raid on the facility, resulting in the destruction of fuel and ammunition stores. Following the withdrawal of American forces in late 1944, the site was reconstructed for the Soviet Air Forces and expanded for jet aircraft use. In 1977, the 831st Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 138th Fighter Aviation Division was stationed at the base after transferring from Boryspil.

The base is currently operated by the Ukrainian Air Force and hosts the 831st Tactical Aviation Brigade. The unit transitioned to Ukrainian command in January 1992. The installation supports tactical aviation operations and houses units operating Sukhoi Su-27P/UB air superiority fighters and L-39 Albatros trainer aircraft.

Infrastructure at the facility includes dispersal hardstands, a large aircraft parking ramp, and at least six hangars. Since 2022, the base has been the target of multiple missile strikes that have caused damage to the runway, fuel storage areas, and ammunition depots. These engagements have also resulted in confirmed equipment losses involving the Su-27 aircraft stationed at the airfield.
