Description
Pápa Air Base is located near Pápa, Hungary, and is the only active military air base in western Hungary. Construction of the facility began in 1936. During World War II, the site hosted German and Hungarian units, and by 1944, it was the largest air base of the Royal Hungarian Air Force. The Royal Hungarian Army 1st Parachute Company was established at the base in 1939, expanding into the 1st Honvéd Parachute Battalion in 1940.
From 1945 to 1961, the Soviet Air Force stationed a fighter regiment at the installation. In 1961, the Hungarian People’s Army 47th Fighter Regiment became the resident unit. The regiment operated multiple variants of the MiG-21, including the F, MF, and bis models. In 1979, the regiment incorporated MiG-23MF and MiG-23UB aircraft into its inventory. The unit was redesignated as the 47th Pápa Tactical Regiment in 1992 and remained until the regiment's disbandment in 2001.
The current Pápa Air Base was established on July 1, 2001, initially serving as a NATO reserve base. In 2007, the installation was selected as the Main Operating Base for the Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC). The multinational Heavy Airlift Wing was activated at the base in July 2009 to provide strategic airlift for member nations.
Infrastructure at the base supports the operation of C-17 Globemaster III aircraft. Facilities include an air traffic control tower inaugurated in 2015. Historical maintenance of the airfield included runway renovations conducted in 1962 and 1984.
